With the rise of digital media and the explosion of the internet, the practice of mailing physical postcards declined dramatically. Today, in a time of instantaneous communication and global connectivity, sending a postcard becomes a subversive act, a quiet reclaiming of epistolary time. Numero 51 invites artists to use the postcard as a means of expression, to give form to a suspended message. The recipient could be anyone, or anything: a love, an enemy, a regret, an obsession, an uncomfortable truth, an unspoken insult, a hope, a lost person, or a past or future version of oneself. The postcard, in its entirety, becomes both a message and artwork. There is no distinction between front and back, image and word, the whole surface becomes a blank canvas on which to imprint the essence of an unexpressed thought, transforming a fragment of vulnerability, anger or sincerity into an artistic gesture.
